A chunky little Victorian brooch made of a trio of silver horseshoes studded with nine-carat gold nails.

Although in modern times many people think a horseshoe has to be a turned-up U shape to "keep the luck in", the traditional Victorian horseshoe points down and was considered a way to disperse any luck and protect a home rather than holding it in.

SIZE: 3 x 1.8cm.

WEIGHT: 3.6g.

MATERIALS: 925 sterling silver, nine-carat (375) gold.

HALLMARKS/STAMPS: Unclear stamp on the clasp.

CONDITION: Good antique condition with light surface wear and tarnish normal for its age.

ERA: Victorian (c.1837-1901).
