A pretty gold "sweetheart" locket dating from the 1880s. The hand-engraved designs of flying swallows, flowers and foliage are absolutely typical of the Victorian Aesthetic period, although it's more common to find silver lockets of this type than gold.
In Victorian England a flying swallow was traditionally considered a token of good luck and the bird represented enduring love and loyalty, as the swallow mates for life.
SIZE: 2.6cm diameter.
WEIGHT: 4.8g.
MATERIALS: Rolled gold back and front.
HALLMARKS/STAMPS: None.
