This is such a pretty locket and chain dating from c.1880s - and hiding messages of both love and luck. The locket is engraved with a pattern of swooping swallows and foliage to the front and more flowering branches with bows at the back. The bow motif is echoed by the neatly-tied three-dimensional bow which connects the locket to its bail. Both the chain and locket are made in slightly rosy nine-carat gold.
In Victorian England a flying swallow was traditionally considered a token of good luck and the bird represented enduring love and loyalty, as the swallow mates for life. Inside the locket is a pressed four-leaf clover, a traditional token of rare good luck and obviously treasured by its owner.
SIZE: The locket measures approximately 3 x 2.7cm (just over an inch wide); the chain is approx 19.5 inches.
WEIGHT: 10.4g.
MATERIALS: Nine-carat gold.
HALLMARKS/STAMPS: There is a 9C plaque on the chain and a 9CT stamp on the clasp.
CONDITION: In excellent antique condition.
ERA: Victorian c.1880s.
