A beautiful antique locket suspended from an extra-long silver belcher chain. The locket is engraved to the front with gorgeously detailed patterns of ferns and ivy - to the Victorians, ivy represented enduring love, whether that meant a deep friendship or a romance. Victorian England went crazy for ferns in the latter half of the 19th century; it even spawned a new word: pteridomania, and woodland fern expeditions were organised so fashionable hobbyists and amateur botanists could find interesting specimens to add to their collections. In the language of flowers ferns symbolised sincerity and humility.
The chain can be worn doubled or tripled and the locket and chain can be worn separately so you get multiple looks for the price of one!
SIZE: The chain is approximately 54 inches (137cm) long. The locket measures 4.5 x 2.8cm (not including the bail).
WEIGHT: 31.6g.
MATERIALS: 925 sterling silver.
HALLMARKS/STAMPS: The locket is stamped SILVER on the bail.
CONDITION: Excellent antique condition.
ERA: Victorian (c.1880s).
PLEASE NOTE! All items are vintage or antique and as such show light general wear appropriate to their age. Bear in mind photos are very magnified and flaws which can be seen in the pictures are often imperceptible to the naked eye in real life. I always do my very best to point out any additional flaws, but please look carefully at all the photos as they are an important part of the listing - and do ask if you have any questions! Antique boxes are for display only unless stated otherwise.
