Victorian Gold Star Paste Diamond Earrings

Desirable little 19th-century gold star earrings, each set with a lovely sparkly cushion-shaped paste diamond. The ear wires are solid nine-carat gold, the stars themselves are rolled gold.

The French jeweller Georges Frédéric Strass invented “Paste" in 1724. True paste is crafted from a special leaded glass that was painstakingly cut and then polished by hand with metal powder until it appeared to shimmer like a diamond. It was an instant success with the chic upper classes of Parisian society and continues to be highly sought after today. Nowadays paste is often used as a generic term to describe costume gemstones.
 
SIZE: The stars are 1cm diameter, the drop from the top of the ear wire is 1.4cm.

WEIGHT: 0.9g.

MATERIALS: Nine-carat gold wires, rolled/filled gold stars, paste gemstones.

HALLMARKS/STAMPS: None found.

CONDITION: In very good antique condition; there is one little edge of the gold surface which is slightly worn next to the stone (see photos) but it's not noticeable when the earrings are in the ear.

ERA: Estimated Victorian (c.1837-1901).
