A pretty 19th century 15-carat gold ring encrusted with gemstones on a lovely ornate boat-shaped face. Sweetly inscribed M.C. and J inside the reverse of the front.

SIZE: O and a half (UK), approx 7 and a half (US).

WEIGHT: 1.8g.

MATERIALS: 15-carat (625) gold, pearl, garnet, green glass (the garnets and pearls test as real gems, the "emeralds" are paste). Fifteen-carat gold pieces are not overly common (in the UK only really used between 1854 and 1932) and this fineness was generally used in high quality pieces.

CONDITION: In good antique condition; some of the stones and the claws are quite worn on the surface but the stones are all firmly set. There is a dark mark where the ring has been resized. The shoulders have a pattern which is worn smooth toward the back.

HALLMARKS/STAMPS: Hallmarked for 15-carat gold, Birmingham Assay Office. The ring has been resized at some time and the date letter is lost.

ERA: Victorian (c.1837-1901).
