A lovely antique gold buckle ring in richly coloured gold studded with three glinting purple stones (untested but likely garnets).

The belt buckle symbolises eternity, loyalty, strength and protection. It represents the binding love between the giver and the wearer, and also a love ever-lasting as the loop has no beginning and no end. It was often used on Victorian betrothal and wedding jewellery, as well as in mourning jewellery as a mark of respect, remembrance and enduring love. Queen Victoria reportedly caused a surge in the popularity of buckle rings when she wore one to symbolise her induction into the Order of the Garter.

SIZE: R and a half (UK), 9 (US). Approximately 4mm wide.

WEIGHT: 2.6g.

MATERIALS: 15-carat gold. Fifteen-carat gold pieces are not overly common (in the UK only really used between 1854 and 1932) and this fineness was generally used in high quality pieces.

HALLMARKS/STAMPS: There is a partial illegible hallmark inside the shank. The ring looks to have been resized so the hallmark may have been lost then.

CONDITION: In very good antique condition with normal light surface wear.

ERA: Estimated late Victorian/Edwardian (c.late 1800s-1914).
