Large Victorian Gold Garnet Etruscan Revival Locket Brooch

A beautiful nine-carat gold brooch in high Victorian style with tons of fantastic ornate details and an excellent quality shimmering magenta almandine garnet. The back has a glassed-in panel of tightly woven hair - in theory this is removable if you want to put your own special photo or keepsake inside but it's not something we've attempted.

Around 1880 many gold treasures dating back to the ancient Etruscan era (700-300 BC) were being discovered in Italian tombs, leading to the emergence of the Etruscan Revival as Victorian jewellers sought to recreate the style. Craftsmen employed considerable skill to make finely detailed pieces using multiple gold working techniques such as granulation, cannetille and filigree and typically employing high-carat gold and semi-precious stones.

HALLMARKS/STAMPS: None. Tests as nine-carat gold (not plated/gilt).

CONDITION: Excellent antique condition.
