A beautiful Victorian locket, nine-carat gold front and back. One side is very ornately engraved with a repeating geometric and foliate pattern while the other bears the legend "Mizpah".

Mizpah jewellery was a token of good luck and historically given as a gift to (or from) a soldier leaving for war as a symbol of emotional attachment between sweethearts. It is also a Hebrew leaving salutation.

We have left the inside panels exactly as we found them with scraps of purple fabric; these can easily be replaced with your own photographs or keepsakes. One side contains an acetate, the other is glass.

The chain in the photographs is not included.

SIZE: Approximately 2.9cm (just over 1 inch wide) x 3.3cm, 4.3cm total drop.

WEIGHT: 12.4g.

MATERIALS: Nine-carat gold back and front, glass, acetate.

HALLMARKS/STAMPS: None found.

CONDITION: Overall the locket is in good antique condition with hinge and clasp in good working order and a nice secure closure. There is enamel loss in the Mizpah lettering and a little pitting in the gold surface on that side.

ERA: Estimated Victorian (c.1837-1901).

Antique and vintage boxes photographed are for display only and are not included unless stated in the description.
