This is an absolute showstopper of a brooch, constructed in 15-carat gold studded with fat turquoise cabochons. The colours of this opulent late 19th century piece are just fabulous, the turquoises are vivid and beautifully complemented by the unmistakeable rich colour of high-carat gold. Secures with an early lever catch which locks the pin firmly in place.
Around 1880 many gold treasures dating back to the ancient Etruscan era (700-300 BC) were being discovered in Italian tombs, leading to the emergence of the Etruscan Revival as Victorian jewellers sought to recreate the style. Craftsmen employed considerable skill to make finely detailed pieces using multiple gold working techniques such as granulation and filigree and typically employing high-carat gold and semi-precious stones.
