A sweet Georgian ring with clear and blue pastes set into silver on a reeded gold shank. It's a lovely design, quite simple but with pretty decorative motifs such as the reeded pattern on the shoulders and triangular details on the edges of the settings.
SIZE: L and a half (UK), approx 6 (US).
WEIGHT: 1.1g.
MATERIALS: Paste gemstones, silver, nine-carat (375) gold.
CONDITION: The ring is in very good antique condition; there is wear to the facets of the pastes but they are all firmly set, and a little of the foil behind the clear stone has degraded.
Diamonds and paste (crystal) were usually foil-backed up till the mid-19th century to make them reflect the candlelight better. Brilliant cut gemstones didn't appear until later and the old cuts didn't sparkle as much as modern stones so it gave them a little help. Practically, it just means you should keep them away from water to avoid it leaking behind the stones and damaging the foil - don't wear them to go swimming or do the washing-up!
HALLMARKS/STAMPS: None.
ERA: Georgian (c.1714-1837).
