A fine quality Georgian brooch beautifully made with a host of natural seed pearls surrounding a glazed (possibly crystal) hand painted sepia miniature framed in nine-carat gold, depicting a maid dressed in rural fashion leading a small lamb or puppy. The back encloses a glazed locket compartment with a photograph of a uniformed soldier and the finely incised legend "10 MARS 1916" above. There is little doubt the piece is English and Georgian in origin so the engraving was doubtless carried out later, possibly in France, to memorialise a loss during the First World War.

SIZE: Approximately 3.5 x 2.3cm.

WEIGHT: 9.8g.

MATERIALS: Silver, gold, pearls.

HALLMARKS/STAMPS: None (tested).

CONDITION: Excellent antique condition.

ERA: Georgian (c.1714-1837) with later inscription and photo.
