A lovely pair of silver drop earrings set with sparkling foil-back pastes. Made by the well regarded jeweller Ciro, founded 1917 in Bond Street, London.

The French jeweller Georges Frédéric Strass invented “Paste" in 1724. True paste is crafted from a special leaded glass that was painstakingly cut and then polished by hand with metal powder until it appeared to shimmer like a diamond. It was an instant success with the chic upper classes of Parisian society and continues to be highly sought after today. Nowadays paste is often used as a generic term to describe costume gemstones.

SIZE: 4 x 1cm.

WEIGHT: 4.8g.

MATERIALS: 925 sterling silver, paste gemstones.

HALLMARKS/STAMPS: The screws are stamped SCP - this is an early mark used by CIRO for their high-quality range of sterling silver costume jewellery.

CONDITION: Very good vintage/antique condition, a little tarnished in places but lovely and bright and sparkly in the ear.

ERA: Estimated Art Deco c.1917-1930s.
