This is a lovely example of an antique paste-set silver lizard brooch. Beautifully made and realistically modelled with a great sense of movement. Set with twinkling white pastes and we believe dating from the 1920s. A genuine Deco original which looks fantastic on a dark jacket or dress!

The French jeweller Georges Frédéric Strass invented “Paste" in 1724. True paste is crafted from a special leaded glass that was painstakingly cut and then polished by hand with metal powder until it appeared to shimmer like a diamond. It was an instant success with the chic upper classes of Parisian society and continues to be highly sought after today. Nowadays paste is often used as a generic term to describe costume gemstones.

SIZE: 5.5 x 2.3cm.

WEIGHT: 6.6g.

MATERIALS: 800 silver, paste gemstones.

HALLMARKS/STAMPS: Marked 800.

CONDITION: Very good antique condition; one of the tiniest pastes on the front leg is vacant but it's practically impossible to notice.

ERA: Estimated Art Deco (c.1920s)
