Saphiret is an antique glass which was created by adding genuine gold to molten blue glass. Held up to the light, it morphs from a mocha/pink colour to a luminous blue glow - once seen never forgotten! Production of saphiret ended at the beginning of the last century when the price of gold rose and the glass became too expensive to produce so there's not a lot of it around. Genuine old saphiret is usually found in non-precious metal settings as, being glass, it was considered costume jewellery in the 19th century.
This pretty antique stick pin (or scarf pin/lapel pin/tie pin/cravat pin) features a high-domed saphiret cabochon framed in a halo of sparkling old-cut pastes atop a metal pin with a centre twist to help keep it in place.
