A beautiful example of Victorian piqué d'or - an intricate 19th century decorative technique developed in France where gold and/or sterling silver is inlaid into a material such as tortoiseshell. When the brooch is held up to the light you can see its beautiful reddish colouring and translucence. Secures with a C clasp.
SIZE: Approx 3.9 x 3.1cm.
WEIGHT: 5.1g.
MATERIALS: Gold, silver, tortoiseshell.
HALLMARKS/STAMPS: None found.
CONDITION: The brooch is in very good antique condition with all its inlays intact and no chips. The surface of the back has crackled (see photos) but no pieces are missing and it's in good sturdy condition.
ERA: Estimated Victorian (c.1837-1901).
