An impressive Victorian Etruscan revival brooch in richly coloured gold; the piece is thickly cased in gold (rolled gold), as is the traditional construction for these brooches. The reverse reveals a locket enclosed in glass and the back can be popped out for you to hide your own photograph or personal keepsake.
Around 1880 many gold treasures dating back to the ancient Etruscan era (700-300 BC) were being discovered in Italian tombs, leading to the emergence of the Etruscan Revival as Victorian jewellers sought to recreate the style. Craftsmen employed considerable skill to make finely detailed pieces using multiple gold working techniques such as granulation and filigree and typically employing high-carat gold and semi-precious stones.
