A beautiful large polished agate cabochon framed in 15-carat gold. The piece was originally a Victorian brooch but has been converted at some time to a pendant with a nine-carat gold bail at the top. The stone has a lovely dreamy quality and its subtle salmon-pink and white colouring is just like a cameo.
SIZE: Approximately 2.7 x 4.7cm.
WEIGHT: 8.8g.
MATERIALS: 15-carat gold, agate. Fifteen-carat gold pieces are not overly common (in the UK only really used between 1854 and 1932) and as this fineness was generally used in high quality pieces, it is attractive to collectors.
HALLMARKS/STAMPS: None found.
CONDITION: The pendant is in good antique condition and the stone is glossy and free of chips and cracks; some of the gold frame edges are a little damaged when seen from the back, and there is a hole where the clasp hinge has been removed, but none of these flaws is visible when the pendant is worn, see photos.
ERA: Estimated Victorian (c.1837-1901).
