A fantastic rare Art Nouveau pewter brooch, in the form of a winged creature (bat? butterfly? moth?!) with a glass scarab beetle at its centre. The scarab is the star here, with a delicate pinkish-violet slightly iridescent finish when it catches the light.

Although the brooch certainly dates from some time around the late Victorian era, it's impossible to say how old the scarab is - scarab jewellery has been produced since Ancient Egyptian times, when the beetle was used as a symbol of the sun god Ra; there was a massive revival of interest in all things Egyptian in Victorian times and it's possible that a 19th century craftsman used a much older scarab as the centrepiece for their brooch.

SIZE: Approximately 6 x 3.5cm. The scarab measures 1.2 x 1.9cm.

WEIGHT: 13.1g.

MATERIALS: Pewter, glass, metal pin.

HALLMARKS/STAMPS: None.

CONDITION: Very good antique condition, see photos.

ERA: Estimated late Victorian Arts and Crafts c.1880s-1910
