A beautiful example of a solid gold Albertina - the more decorative version of the Albert watch chain used by Victorian gentlemen and named for Queen Victoria's husband. Albertina chains were usually much prettier, with decorative ornaments such as tassels, and were worn as jewellery rather than pure functional items.
The piece features four strands of belcher/rolo chain, with two sliders which can be moved along, creating a looping festoon effect if desired. The sliders and terminals are chased on both sides with lovely Aesthetic period patterns typical of the 1880s. One end terminates in a dog clip, the other in an oversized bolt ring and a beautiful six-strand foxtail tassel.
SIZE: 28.5cm (just over 11 inches) from clip to clasp, not including the dangling tassel fob.
WEIGHT: 20.1g.
MATERIALS: Nine-carat (375) gold.
HALLMARKS/STAMPS: Stamped 9C on the dog clip, alongside the sponsor's mark GEW LTD. Tested in multiple places to confirm nine-carat gold throughout.
CONDITION: In excellent antique condition with minor surface wear normal for the age of the piece.
ERA: Estimated late Victorian/Edwardian (c.late 1800s-1914).
