A lovely old gold ring set with a hand-cut dark red stone, likely red jasper or carnelian, framed with a delicate scrolling foliate design. A little bent and bruised but full of character - perhaps suitably for a piece dating from the year the Second World War broke out!

SIZE: K (UK), 5 and a quarter (US). The stone measures 1.3 x 1.1cm and the band is approximately 3mm at the back.

WEIGHT: 2.5g.

MATERIALS: Nine-carat (375) gold.

HALLMARKS/STAMPS: Hallmarked for nine-carat gold, Birmingham 1939, with an illegible sponsor's mark. The hallmark is an unusual one in that the marks are stamped into the back of the face of the ring rather than on the shank, possibly because it seems to be of hollow construction.

CONDITION: When examined closely the ring has a small tear on one edge and various dents and pockmarks, all unseen from the front. There is a dark line at the back where it has likely been resized at some time. The piece is in good solid condition, with the stone firmly set. The engraved design around the stone is quite worn.

ERA: 1939.
